Pepe's Pizza- New Haven, CT

It took me one Google search to find out about Pepe's. It consistently ranks at the top of "Best Pizza in Connecticut" lists so Anne and I decided to give it a try. Located on Wooster Street in what is claimed to be New Haven's Little Italy, Pepe's consistently draws a crowd. We waited about 20 minutes outside before we were seated. We ordered a straight up cheese and the famous clam pizza.

The Clam pie- no tomato sauce, no mozzarella

Both pies came out on a baking sheet with a nice, thin, chewy crust that was burnt around the edges. I am told that this is part of the appeal of Pepe's pizza but we ended up with uneaten burnt crusts in the pan. The clam pizza was well seasoned and the clams seemed fresh. Anne was not crazy about the clams but enjoyed the cheese.

Overall, I would say the hype is earned at Pepe's. I was not ready to anoint it the best pizza I have eaten, but I would definitely go back.
